I can see Snowy's point but I cannot understand waiting for the government to give you permission to obtain a weapon to protect yourself.
Obtain a weapon any way you can WITHOUT government approval. Hide it and never speak of it to anyone. Be sure you keep it in a place that is somewhat readily accessible for your defense.

I have many thoughts on their leaving, some will never be put to paper for if nothing else I highly empathize with those who are indeed stranded by economical realities.
